Marine First Aid — What You Need to Know
Two certification levels, two validity timelines, and no recertification shortcut. Here's how marine first aid works in Canada.
Two Levels of Marine First Aid
Transport Canada recognizes two levels of marine first aid certification, both delivered through the Canadian Red Cross. Which one you need depends on your vessel type, voyage distance, and the certificate you hold (or are pursuing) as a marine professional.
| Marine Basic First Aid | Marine Advanced First Aid | |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 2 days (16 hours) | 4 days (32 hours) |
| Vessel Type | Near-shore / inshore vessels | Offshore / unlimited voyage vessels |
| Certification Body | Canadian Red Cross | Canadian Red Cross |
| Red Cross Validity | 3 years | 3 years |
| Transport Canada Validity | Up to 5 years | Up to 5 years |
| Recertification | Full course retake required | Full course retake required |
Who Needs Which Level?
The level you need is determined by Transport Canada based on your vessel category and the officer certificate you hold or are working toward. In general:
- Marine Basic — Required for crew on near-coastal and sheltered-water vessels. Common for inshore fishing, small passenger vessels, and harbour craft.
- Marine Advanced — Required for crew on unlimited-voyage and offshore vessels, or anyone pursuing a higher-level Transport Canada certificate (e.g., Master 3000 GT or Fishing Master). Also common for those working on larger fishing vessels operating beyond the near-coastal zone.
If you're not sure which level applies to your situation, check the manning requirements on your vessel's certificate or contact Transport Canada's Marine Safety office.
Dual Validity — The Part That Confuses Everyone
Marine first aid certificates carry two validity periods, and they don't match. This is the single most confusing aspect of the certification.
Red Cross Validity: 3 Years
The Canadian Red Cross issues your certificate and considers it valid for 3 years from the date of completion. This is the standard validity for all Red Cross certifications across Canada.
Transport Canada Validity: Up to 5 Years
Transport Canada may accept your marine first aid training for up to 5 years when it's linked to a marine certificate. The exact duration depends on your specific certificate and when it was issued.
Which Timeline Matters?
In practice, most employers and vessel operators follow the 3-year Red Cross cycle. It's the safer approach — your Red Cross certification is the physical proof you show during inspections, and if it's expired, you'll have questions to answer regardless of what Transport Canada's records say.
Our recommendation: renew every 3 years. Don't gamble on the 5-year window.
No Recertification Course Exists
Unlike Standard First Aid or Emergency First Aid, there is no shortened recertification or refresher option for marine courses. When your certificate expires, you retake the full course — 2 days for Marine Basic, 4 days for Marine Advanced.
Plan accordingly. If your certificate is expiring soon, book early. Marine courses run less frequently than standard first aid classes, and seats fill up quickly — especially during spring when fishing season ramps up.
What You'll Learn
Both courses cover core first aid skills plus maritime-specific scenarios you won't find in a standard course. Topics include:
- Primary and secondary patient assessment
- CPR and AED use
- Wound care — from minor cuts to serious bleeding management
- Fracture immobilization and splinting
- Hypothermia and cold-water immersion response
- Burns, including chemical burns common in marine settings
- Oxygen therapy and administration
- Maritime-specific rescue scenarios
Marine Advanced goes deeper into each topic and adds extended patient care scenarios — situations where help may be hours or days away rather than minutes.
Prerequisites
There are no formal prerequisites for either Marine Basic or Marine Advanced First Aid. You don't need a prior first aid certificate to enrol.
That said, if you're heading into Marine Advanced without any first aid background, the pace can be intense. Prior experience with Standard First Aid or on-the-water work is helpful, though not required.
