Be the medical lead on board

When you’re operating far from shore, someone needs to take responsibility for care. This course prepares you to assess, treat, and manage illness or injury when outside help isn’t close.

This course is for you if…

  • You’re a master or officer who needs MAFA for certification or endorsement

  • You’ve been designated as the first aid provider on a coastal or unlimited voyage vessel

  • You’re expected to make medical decisions on board, not just provide basic care

This training is about stepping into that role with confidence and clear judgment.

Built for medical responsibility at sea

This training focuses on the reality of being the medical lead on board. You’re not just responding—you’re assessing, monitoring, and making decisions over time, often with limited resources and delayed evacuation.

  • Meets Transport Canada TP 13008 and STCW VI/4 requirements

  • Canadian Red Cross Marine Advanced First Aid certification (valid 3 years)

  • Transport Canada endorsement valid up to 5 years (where applicable)

  • Hands-on, scenario-based training drawn from real marine incidents

What you’ll learn

  • How to assess and manage serious medical situations when evacuation isn’t immediate

  • Ongoing patient monitoring and documentation at sea

  • Managing exposure to fuels, cargoes, and shipboard gases

  • Using radio medical advice effectively and communicating clearly with shore‑side support

  • Safe use of shipboard medical supplies, including basic pharmacology

  • Advanced care for head, spine, chest, abdominal, and pelvic injuries

  • Treatment of fractures, burns, and hypothermia

  • Safe techniques for reaching, moving, and transferring patients on board and to rescue craft
